Which peptides are actually researched for muscle vs just hyped?

I keep seeing the same handful of names thrown around — CJC-1295, Ipamorelin, IGF-1 LR3, MGF, follistatin-344 — and I'm trying to sort out which ones have a real research literature behind them versus which are mostly marketing and forum lore.

Not asking what to use. I'm genuinely trying to build a mental map of where the science is. My impression so far is that GH secretagogues have the most human data because some were studied as actual drug candidates, while the myostatin/follistatin gene-therapy stuff is almost entirely animal work. Is that roughly right?

Would love if people could point me to review articles rather than just opinions. Trying to read primary sources where I can.

Your map is roughly right. The GH secretagogue class (GHRHs like CJC-1295, and ghrelin-receptor agonists like ipamorelin and the GHRPs) has the deepest human literature because several were developed and trialed as pharma candidates. That doesn't mean 'safe and effective for muscle' — it means there are actual pharmacokinetic and endocrine studies to read.

IGF-1 and especially MGF get cited constantly but a lot of the muscle-specific claims trace back to rodent or in-vitro work. Myostatin/follistatin is fascinating mechanistically and there are human myostatin-antibody drug trials, but the peptide/gene stuff people discuss is mostly preclinical. Search terms: 'growth hormone secretagogue review', 'myostatin inhibition clinical trial'.

Worth adding that 'has human data' and 'has data showing it builds muscle in healthy trained people' are two very different bars. A lot of the endocrine studies were in deficiency states or older adults, not gym populations. The extrapolation to hypertrophy is where the hype fills the gap.

This is exactly the distinction I was missing, thank you. The 'studied in deficiency, not in trained lifters' point reframes a lot of what I'd read. Off to the review articles.
