GHRP-2 is a synthetic growth-hormone secretagogue.
GHRP-2 (Growth Hormone Releasing Peptide-2) is a synthetic growth-hormone secretagogue: a short peptide designed to prompt the pituitary gland to release its own stored growth hormone. It belongs to the same functional family as GHRP-6 and other ghrelin-mimetic peptides. Rather than supplying growth hormone directly, GHRP-2 acts on the growth hormone secretagogue (ghrelin) receptor, and this ghrelin-receptor-mediated pathway is the mechanism most consistently described in the literature. Because it engages the ghrelin system, GHRP-2 also influences appetite signaling, which is one of its most frequently reported effects.
GHRP-2 is studied because it offers a way to probe how the growth-hormone axis can be stimulated pharmacologically. It has a history of use as a pharmacological research tool and in mechanistic studies of GH secretion, and preclinical (animal) work has documented its GH-releasing effects. That said, the honest evidence picture is limited: GHRP-2 is not an approved medicine for general use, human data are far more constrained than for established therapies, and much of what is known about downstream outcomes comes from animal or short-term pharmacological settings rather than large, controlled clinical trials. GHRP-2 emerges from a line of synthetic growth-hormone-releasing peptides developed largely from Cyril Bowers' work on enkephalin-derived compounds that stimulated GH release.
