VIP shows up in this category's description and I realized I barely understand it beyond the name. My rough understanding is that it's an endogenous signaling peptide with roles in gut motility, secretion, and some immune/anti-inflammatory signaling, and there's research interest around it in conditions involving inflammation and the gut-immune interface.

Can anyone with a better handle on the literature sketch out what's genuinely being studied here versus what's just online extrapolation? Not asking about use — just trying to build an accurate mental model of the biology and the state of evidence.

Good instinct to separate those. VIP is a well-characterized endogenous neuropeptide — motility, secretion, vasodilation, and yes a documented anti-inflammatory/immunoregulatory arm that's why it shows up in gut-immune discussions. The research interest in inflammatory conditions is real at the mechanistic and preclinical level. What's mostly online extrapolation is the jump from 'endogenous molecule with immunoregulatory roles' to any specific benefit claim for supplementation; the human therapeutic evidence for the uses people speculate about is limited and it has real physiological effects (blood pressure, etc.) that make casual framing inappropriate. Adding one framing that helped me: a lot of these gut-immune peptides (VIP, KPV, LL-37) are things the body already makes and regulates carefully. The research is often about understanding that endogenous role, which is very different from a case that exogenous administration is safe or beneficial. Keeping that distinction front of mind cuts through most of the hype. As always, anything health-related, talk to a professional who knows the current evidence.
